Ever had someone ghost you after showing interest in your services?
They followed you, liked your posts, maybe even sent a DM or email asking about your services… and then—silence.
Frustrating, right? I have had this experience as well.
Running a freelance business from home is amazing. You have flexible hours, no annoying commute, and working in comfy PJs! 🙂 But let me be real with you: getting clients isn’t always easy. I can tell you this for free based on my 5 years of experience!
There were months when I had so many clients that I exceeded my income goals—and then there were months when I had nothing. No projects, no callbacks, just silence. It felt like a constant rollercoaster, and I knew I needed a better way to create stability in my freelance business.
Attracting visitors isn’t enough. You need a brand that converts—one that makes people excited to work with you the moment they land on your website or profile.
You can have the best skills, the prettiest website, and a social media page full of content—but if your brand isn’t speaking directly to your ideal clients, they’ll scroll right past you.
So, how do you build a brand that not only attracts visitors but also converts them into paying clients?
I’m breaking it down into five simple steps—the same steps I’ve used in my own business over the years to create stability and returning clients. And the best part? You can refine them to fit your business too.
Before we dive in, here’s a quick video about how to get clients online as a freelancer:
Now let me share five powerful steps to build a brand that doesn’t just get attention—but actually gets you clients!
1. Get Clear on Who You’re Talking To
The first step in building a brand that sells is knowing exactly who you’re selling to. If you try to talk to everyone, you’ll end up attracting no one.
Your message should answer these questions:
✔ Who is my ideal client? – who do you help?
✔ What problem do they have?
✔ How does my service help them? – why should they choose you?
Give your dream client a personality! (Like a client avatar). Instead of saying “I help women start online businesses,” try “I help busy moms launch profitable freelance businesses while working from home.” See the difference?
2. Craft a Brand Message That Connects
Have you ever walked into a store and felt confused about what they actually sell? That’s what happens when your brand message is all over the place.
People don’t buy services—they buy solutions to their problems. Your brand message should instantly make potential clients think, Wow, she gets me!
Use this simple formula:
“I help [who you serve] achieve [the result] without [the struggle they want to avoid].”
Create a one-liner brand statement like: “I help busy entrepreneurs grow their brands with strategic web design, so they can make more sales without tech stress.” For example:
✔ “I help new freelancers build a strong brand without the confusion and tech headaches.”
✔ “I help coaches attract premium clients without relying on social media 24/7.”
3. Make Your Brand Look Professional (On A Budget)
You don’t need a big budget to have a polished brand for a start, but you do need consistency! Your colors, fonts, and visuals should make people trust you instantly. When I started my business, I didn’t have a website but I had a portfolio that attracted my ideal clients to do business with me.
🔥 Keep it simple:
✔ Pick 2-3 brand colors that reflect your vibe.
✔ Choose 1-2 fonts that are easy to read.
✔ Use high-quality images that represent your busin
Canva is your best friend for creating branded templates on a budget! I’ll leave a free template HERE for those who don’t want to go through the design stress.
4. Build a Website That Sells for You
A website isn’t just a fancy online brochure—it’s your digital storefront and home. If done right, it should guide visitors from “just looking” to “where do I book?” Your website should scream everything about you as a freelancer and how your ideal clients can connect with you.
Make sure your website has:
✔ A clear headline that explains what you do.
✔ A services page that outlines your offers simply.
✔ Testimonials to build trust.
✔ A strong call-to-action (CTA) like “Book a Free Call” or “Start Your Project.”

Are you confused about where to start or what the cost implications are? I didn’t have a big website as I started my freelance business, but my portfolio got me 10 client sign-ups in the first 3 months of launching my business. You can grab my portfolio template HERE to get started.
5. Show Up Like an Expert (Even If You’re Just Starting!)
Your brand isn’t just about looks—it’s about how you show up. The more consistently you put yourself out there, the easier it is for clients to find and trust you.
Clients won’t hire you if they don’t see you as the go-to person in your field. And guess what? You don’t need 10+ years of experience to be seen as an expert—you just need to show up consistently.
Ways to position yourself as an expert:
✔ Create valuable content that solves problems (Content ideas & tips, behind-the-scenes, success stories).
✔ Start an email list to nurture your audience.
✔ Engage with potential clients instead of just posting and hoping for the best
People don’t always buy the first time they see you—but if you keep showing up, they’ll remember you when they’re ready to invest. Post “before & after” transformations of your work to show real results.
Make It Easy for Clients to Say “YES”
The best brands don’t just get clients—they turn them into raving fans who refer more business. If your inquiry process is complicated, clients will leave. Make it ridiculously easy for them to book you. simple ways to do this are:
💡 Set clear expectations from the start
💡 Respond fast—clients love quick replies!
💡 Surprise them with a thank-you note or bonus.
💡 Use an easy booking form (Google Forms, Calendly, etc…)
💡 Deliver on time (or earlier!)
When clients love working with you, they’ll send more clients your way—without you having to market yourself constantly! Before you know it, you’ll be working with dream clients who can’t wait to book you!
